A wooden cutting board is an important kitchen tool for any cook. It is one of the most frequently used items in the kitchen. But to keep it healthy and free from odors or bacteria, it needs a few simple but important care steps.
1. Cleaning immediately after use
Rinse the cutting board with warm water and mild detergent, without letting it soak – prolonged contact with water can warp it. For stubborn stains, sprinkle with sea salt, rub with a slice of lemon and rinse. Lemon juice naturally disinfects and removes odors.
2. Regular oiling
Apply a thin layer of mineral or natural oil (e.g. linseed or special board oil) every three to four weeks. Let the cutting board soak for at least 4 hours, wipe off the excess and let it dry upright. This step fills the pores of the wood, repels moisture and prevents cracking.
3. Proper storage
Store the board upright or hanging, in a place with air circulation, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. This will help it dry evenly and keep its shape.
Bonus tip: For engraved boards, use a soft brush instead of abrasive sponges to avoid damaging the relief. After a good oiling, the engraving will not be filled with residue, but will become even more expressive.
